Love Working In The Yard

Well, today is the second day of my "Week of Yard Work." This is an annual tradition of mine where I attempt to make up for a year's worth of yard neglect in a few short evenings. Actually I am rather serious about keeping a nice yard this year and have set my goal of being the best on the block. Yesterday I did some maintenance and cleaned the expansion crack in the concrete between the house and the walk way on the side of the house and sealed the cracks. I found this great stuff made by DAP called "Concrete 3.0." (I picked up at Home Depot) It comes in a caulk tube and has the consistency of thick maple syrup. You just put that in the cracks and it is self-leveling and dries in about 3 hours. The color is lighter than the old concrete walkway, but I think the color will tone down with a little dirt and wear and should blend in nicely.

Next I moved on to rebuilding the flower bed in the front yard and planted 12 Lilly plants of various colors. Thinking ahead (for once) I installed a soaker hose in the bed and covered with a nice thick layer of mulch to help keep the soil moist.

I noticed a few spots in the front yard where the grass was thinned out so I got out the garden weasel and loosened up the soil, then sowed some grass seed and watered well. There are a couple of areas in the front of the house that for whatever reason just do not grow grass well. I have my suspicions it has to do with the collapsed sewage line the previous owner neglected but that is another story all together.

Feeling good about the yard, I then got out my trusty rake and de-thatched the yard. To wrap things up I washed down the wrought iron fence and gate.

Tomorrow I will spray for insects and ants, and touch up any rust spots on the iron fence.
